Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
- 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/3 cup molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- Royal Icing
- Assorted decorations (candy, icing, sprinkles, etc.)
Instructions
Making the Dough
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the molasses and egg and beat until well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until the dough comes together. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
Making the Glaze
In a small saucepan, combine the light brown sugar, water, cardamom, and almond extract. Heat over medium heat and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and let cool.
Assembling the House
Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and divide it into two equal parts. Roll out each piece of dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out the pieces for the roof and walls of the house using cookie cutters or a sharp knife. Place the pieces on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before assembling.
Using the royal icing, assemble the house by attaching the walls and roof together. Let the icing dry completely before decorating the house. Add a variety of decorations, such as sprinkles, candy, and colored icing, to make your house unique. Brush the entire house with the cooled glaze and let dry. Enjoy!
